A little about us

Lord Shiva
Lord Buddha

Historically, the Nepalese religious tradition evolved through the amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Hinduism and Buddhism share common values, tradition and shrine for worship and believe in peaceful co-existence, compassion, forgiveness and religious harmony. The people of Nepalese origin take immense pride in this religious heritage and traditions that significantly define the Nepalese way of life.

In light of the growing Nepalese Canadian populace in Canada, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and its surrounding areas, it is prudent to communally own a place for congregating, practicing and celebrating Nepalese religious rites, festivities, and traditions.

Therefore, we, the people of Nepalese origin, came together to establish a place of worship called the Shree Pashupatinath Mandir with the goal of advancing Hindu and Buddhist religious heritage and traditions in Canada and thereby enriching Canadian multiculturalism. However, due to the growing needs of community and service gaps/resources, Nepalese Canadian Heritage Centre (NCHC) has expanded its community engagement programs and services in recent days.

Mission & Objectives
To advance Hindu and Buddhist religious heritage respecting the Canadian multiculturalism enshrined in the Canadian Multiculturalism Act.
To establish and operate a place of worship for Hindus and Buddhists.
To provide ritual services for observing and celebrating Hindu and Buddhist religious events and ceremonies.
Short-term Goals
Conduct fund raising campaign by exploring all potential sources.
Provide services of rites and rituals ranging from birth to death, e.g., naming (christening) ceremony, Annaprasan (child food initiation ceremony), Bratabandha (rite of passage), wedding ceremony and Shraddha (last/death rites), among others.
Conduct religious discourses.
Long-term Goals
Own bigger size land to construct a grand Shree Pashupatinath temple with a worship hall that can accommodate over 500 people.
Values
We promote and we are committed to our values.
RESPECT - We respect every individual in our community
INTEGRITY - We act ethically and honestly
COMMITMENT - We are committed towards our community
EXCELLENCE - We try excellence and quality in all we do
TEAM WORK - We work together to achieve our common goals

Events and Activities

NCHC organizes various socio-cultural activities, festivals and celebrations in our community. These activities and celebrations provide opportunities for the individuals and families to come together to honor and rejoice our traditions and customs. Every year, we host a Nepali New Year (middle of April), Teej (Festival of Women) Dashain (greatest festival in Nepal), Tihar/Dipawali (Festival of Lights). These celebrations also provide opportunities to learn about our traditional culture, develop social connections among the community members and have fun. Hosting such activities on an annual basis, we have entertained thousands of community members.

Dashain

Dashain is one of the biggest and widely celebrated festivals in Nepal. It is based on the lunar calendar and falls in the months of Aswin or Kartik (Nepali calendar) and between September and October (English calendar). This festival has its own cultural value and reason behind the celebrations. This is an occasion of great joy, delight, enthusiasm for all people. It signifies the victory of Good over Evil, truth over untruth and of justice over injustice. Elders give blessings to youngsters by putting Tika on their forehead and jamara on ears or head.

Tihar

Tihar (Dipawali) is also known as The Festival of Lights, as the houses are decorated with additional lights and colorful flowers. Tihar is falls between the month October and November and celebrated for five consecutive days. However, the date of observing the festival depends upon the cycle of the moon. Playing Deusi-Bhailo, and worshiping different animals (e.g. cow, dog, etc.) and birds (i.e. crow) as parts of nature are important aspects of this festival. This joyous festival brings dedication, enthusiasm, lights up the mood with social gatherings.

Teej

‘Teej’ also known as ‘Haritalika Teej’ or ‘Festival of Women’. This festival usually falls in the Nepali Sharawan or Bhadra month (August or September) and last for three days, including enjoying a grand feast, observing a rigid fasting, praying to Lord Shiva, bathing holy river (where possible), and performing traditional songs specific to the occasion. Therefore, this festival holds an immense religious, social and cultural significance. Every year, NCHC celebrate this festival with the purpose of promoting and preserving Nepalese socio cultural and religious traditions and values in Canada, a home away from home, as well as educate our children the future torch-bearers.
